Gone are the vivid reds and oranges of those winter dawns in Kaaawa.
Now it’s blue skies, with the sun well above the horizon by the time we get down to the beach, usually by 6:45 a.m.
It like a whole new spin on starting the day.
Here’s an example taken this week.

It was overcast and threatening when we got down to the beach early this morning. The sun, which came up about 6:10 a.m. today, had already been up for about half an hour before were on the beach, but the thick dark clouds muted its presence.

Tanya Aiau, a friend and former neighbor who still lives in Kaaawa, is hoping to find sponsors for her participation in this Sunday’s Life Foundation AIDS Walk.
I hope you’ll give her your support!
Since I am a Ka’a'awa resident and you have such a huge readership on your blog…..I thought you might be willing to share the link on your site…all you need to do is click on www.honoluluaidswalk.org click sponsor a walker, and type in my name Tanya Aiau. There is a brief personal message from me on the page.
And Tanya is a cat person as well. What else do you need to know?
Please consider supporting her effort.

We usually don’t pay much attention when the Portuguese Man o’ War are washed up onto the sand. Sometimes there are many of them. Often none.
Yesterday there were a few.
I finally stopped and took a closer look. This one was probably a little under two inches in lenth, with the long blue string of stingers that stretched out across the sand.
Up close, it was quite beautiful, with a sail tipped with a line of red.

We had just gotten down to Swanzy Beach Park yesterday morning when the rain hit. It was a driving rain with strong wind. We stopped to see four of our favorite dogs who live near the park, then tried to plunge ahead. But when the wind threatened to rip our umbrellas apart, we retreated inland to Hauhele Road, just a block in from the ocean. That’s when the rainbows appeared.
We pushed on, and the morning changed. The rain stopped, the cloud moved on, blue sky appeared. It seemed a minor miracle.

This morning (Saturday) was different. Pretty nice from the get-go and it stayed that way. This was the view at Swanzy this morning.

Oh, oh!
Somethings going on in the world of the Kaaawa peacocks.
For several days, we’ve heard a loud peacock cry early in the morning, sounding louder than usual.
This morning we found out why.
The Big Peacock, the one with the big tail feathers, has apparently decided to roost in the huge banyan tree on the side of our yard.
This first photo shows our house in the lower forground, with the big banyan tree towering above. Look closely, and you’ll see Mr. Peacock.

Here’s a shot with a clearer view of Mr. Peacock.
He’s up there all alone.
Has he been driven out of the peacock family? Has he lost those cute hens to his own offspring?
We haven’t figured it out.
But something’s going on. Hopefully we’ll figure it out soon.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from our morning walks during the month of February 2010.
It’s a perfect time of year to be watch the sun make its daily appearance. We don’t have to leave the house too early, or wait until too late. In just a few weeks, the sun will already be up by the time we leave the house. We rarely leave the house before 6 a.m., and it takes another 20 minutes or so to get down to the beach. So at that point we just shift gears. I get more photos of the dogs we see in the mornings, the ocean has more color, and tides tend to get lower.
It’s all in the annual cycle.
